Sans Souci Souffle 2009

Sans Souci Soufflé

The winning team!

Richard Wallwork (Speech), Claire Laland (Chairman), Jeremy Cribb (Topic)

Solihull Speakers’ Club was delighted to win the Sans Souci Soufflé at the competition held on October 16. Five teams competed; Redditch, Stratford, Sans Souci, Solihull and Yardley.

The team consists of speech maker, topic taker and chairman. Marks are given out of 140; 60 for the speech and 40 each for chairman and topic taker. The trophy was first competed for in 1991 and Solihull won it in 1992. However that was the only time they had won the trophy until this year. So that made it really special.

The theme for the speech was Behind the Scenes and Richard entertained and informed us with Behind the Scenes at the National Trust where he learnt to attack the rhododendron! Did you know it is actually a weed? The topic takers have to speak for three minutes on a subject they are given on the night. About 15 seconds notice! Jeremy’s subject was Appearances can be deceptive. Jeremy spoke about this with skill and humour. The chair has to introduce the team, use correct salutations and provide appropriate linkages. This Claire did succinctly and with wit. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE TEAM.

The Area Topics Contest was held the same evening and our contestant, Heather Singleton, was 3rd. Well done Heather.
