The Education Evening on "Making a Good Speech"
Two Education Evenings are held each season. The first of these on October 19th 2005 will cover 'Making a Good Speech'.
Guidance and advice will include how to:
The evening will be based on some high quality speeches delivered by experienced speakers to demonstrate the techniques.
These evenings are extremely popular and open to anyone interested in joining. In addition to Club members, members from other Clubs within the ASC can attend. This makes for a broad range of experience and time is usually allowed for questions and discussion.
A Previous Education Evening covered “Business Presentations”
This course was run informally to stimulate discussion and exchange of ideas, and certainly achieved its aim.
Although a business presentation can be anything from a highly technical affair to a 5 minute “sell your company” speech or a seminar lasting days, this education evening produced a wide range of suggested guidelines.
The evening began with some guidelines on arranging and chairing a business presentation. Many points, obvious to those with experience, were not so obvious to everyone. Not least, this included checking that the venue is soundproof and no disco is booked for next door.
One of our newest members then
presented part of a business presentation she had given recently at her work.
This was evaluated and various general points developed, taking in foil layout,
handouts, laser pointers and presentation techniques.
A demonstration of a computer based presentation with the aid of Powerpoint software proved extremely interesting. It was an eye-opener for most of us, who have to do our best with the OHP or slide projector, or even a good old-fashioned flip chart or white-board.
Finally dress and image was discussed and how to deal with questions, especially how to manage that persistent, dominant attendee who is full of questions.
Certainly an evening to be repeated and more work to be done within the Club to develop potential in business presentations.
Whilst advice on business presentations is given in the ASC Speakers Guide, nothing can replace experience. With this is mind, there are various set assignments specified in The Guide providing an opportunity for this.
